Army troops rescue abducted provost, son in Zamfara

Men of the Nigerian Army have successfully carried out a rescue operation on the abducted former Provost of Federal College of Education, Gusau, and his son.

The troops, Operation Hadarin Daji, were said to be on their routine patrol along Shemori—Yandoto Road at Marke General Area before sighting the armed abductors.

“The troops engaged the Bandits in a firefight for several hours; due to the troops fire superiority, the bandits fled in disarray into forest along the area,” the report stated.

It added, “The OPHD troops immediately went in hot pursuit of the Bandits into the forest which forced them to abandon 2 civilians who were rescued from the Bandits unhurt and recovered 2 operational motorcycles of the fleeing bandits.

Unknown to the troops, the rescuees were Dr Hassan Abubakar Augie, a former Provost Federal College of Education (Technical), Gusau and his son, an interview revealed.

A preliminary investigation made it known “that the abductees were abducted by Armed bandits late last night from his residence and were taken into the forest before the timely arrival of troops who rescued them.”

The Nigerian Army maintained that the two abductees had been reunited with their families amid jubilation, stressing the need for the force to be more vigilant and scale up patrols in the general area.
