Muslim student shatters 40-year record, emerges best law graduate at LASU
A remarkable achievement has been accomplished at Lagos State University (LASU) by Aminat Yusuf, a student of Law, who has become the institution’s most outstanding graduate in its four-decade history.
Out of the 9,901 students from various departments who will be graduating next week, Aminat distinguishes herself as the sole student to achieve a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0. She joins the esteemed group of 282 First Class graduates.
At a press conference led by LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, it was announced that “Aminat would receive a reward of N500,000 from the university during the convocation ceremony.”
The event will witness the graduation of a total of 1,034 diploma and postgraduate students.
Prof Olatunji-Bello emphasized that all the graduates have undergone comprehensive training, equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in their respective fields and other lawful endeavors. The convocation lecture, titled “The Impact of Digitalization on Higher Education in the Digital Age,” will be delivered by Mr Sonny Ehono, the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, with Prof Abubakar Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of NUC, serving as the event’s chairman. This lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20, 2023.
Prof Olatunji-Bello also revealed that the award ceremonies for diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees will take place on Wednesday, June 21, followed by the academic doctorate and honorary doctorate degrees ceremony the next day. All of these events will be held at the university’s main auditorium.
The vice-chancellor further announced the names of eight distinguished individuals who will be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees and appreciation awards during the convocation ceremony.
This esteemed group includes Mr Babatunde Fashola, the former Lagos State governor and immediate past Minister of Works and Housing; Dr Kayode Fayemi, the former Ekiti State governor; Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of the Lagos State governor; Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, the immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives; and Pastor Daniel Olukoya of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries. Additionally, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the former deputy governor of Lagos State; Oba Saheed Elegushi; and Oba Suleiman Ashade will be honored.
According to Prof Olatunji-Bello, Fashola, Fayemi, Oba Ashade, and Mrs Sanwo-Olu will receive Doctor of Letters degrees in various fields, while Pastor Olukoya, Gbajabiamila, and Oba Elegushi will be conferred with Doctor of Science, Law, and Arts degrees, respectively.
The university has recognized them for their significant contributions to the institution and the nation as a whole.
Also, two professors from LASU, namely Dapo Asaju from the Department of Religion and Peace Studies, and Babajide Elemo from the Department of Biochemistry, will be honored with the title of Distinguished Professor.
Prof Olatunji-Bello expressed her gratitude to the university’s management team, staff, and students for their unwavering support and cooperation since assuming office two years ago.
She affirmed that “LASU will continue to foster and uphold a culture of excellence among its students and faculty.”
