Ethiopia submits bid to host Africa Cup of Nations as PM meets football legends
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has announced that Ethiopia has officially submitted its application to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), accompanied by extensive preparatory activities to bolster the bid.
The announcement was made during a friendly match early Sunday morning, where the Prime Minister played alongside some of Africa’s football legends, who are in Ethiopia for the Shenen Africa Festival.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Abiy emphasised Ethiopia’s commitment to hosting the prestigious tournament, acknowledging the complex procedures involved.
He underscored that Ethiopia is intensifying its efforts to meet the requirements and make its request successful.
The Prime Minister revealed that comprehensive discussions have been held with the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding Ethiopia’s bid. He expressed confidence that hosting AFCON would significantly stimulate Ethiopian football and contribute to the development of the country’s tourism sector.
“The current visit of legendary African football players, known for their stints in the English Premier League and various European clubs, presents a valuable opportunity to showcase Ethiopia’s potential,” Prime Minister Abiy stated.
He highlighted that Ethiopia is leveraging its diplomatic channels and engaging in extensive discussions, including with the president of CAF, to support its bid.
“If we succeed in these endeavors, our people will be informed, and we will begin preparations in terms of hotel and stadium arrangements as well as other necessary preparations,” the Prime Minister added.
Prime Minister Abiy also mentioned the role of events like the Great Run in promoting Ethiopia’s global image and confirmed that efforts in various sports fields, including horse riding, would be reinforced.
The former African footballers and other notable figures from the continent participated in the Green Legacy initiative by planting trees at Friendship Park.
