Explosion Rocks Mosque at Gamboru Market in Maiduguri
An explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) has rocked a mosque at Gamboru Main Market in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 24, at about 6:00 p.m., while Muslim worshippers were observing the Maghrib prayers, according to reports.
The mosque, located within the busy Gamboru market, is usually filled with worshippers, including traders and buyers who patronise the market on a daily basis, raising concerns over possible casualties.
However, details regarding injuries or loss of lives were yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
Security operatives were said to have cordoned off the area shortly after the explosion, while residents fled the scene in panic.
As at press time, the Borno State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.
The development has heightened tension in Maiduguri, a city that has experienced repeated attacks linked to insurgency in the past.
