Lagos NYCN Chairman Adigun Leads Delegation to Senate Zonal Public Hearing on 1999 Constitution Review

The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State Chapter, Ibrahim Adigun, on Friday led a delegation of young leaders from across the state to participate in the Senate Zonal Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution, held at Watercress Hotel, Ikeja.
According to Adigun, the public hearing, part of a two-day nationwide exercise (excluding the North-West zone), is aimed at facilitating a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution—an effort widely considered long overdue and vital to the nation’s democratic progress.
Speaking on the experience, Adigun stated: “We seized the opportunity to lend our voices to the discourse, advocating for a constitutional framework that promotes inclusion, decentralization, accountability, and a future where young Nigerians have access to greater opportunities for participation in governance.”
Among the top issues discussed during the hearing were the creation of state police, electoral reforms, and the proposal to create 18 new local government areas—a move intended to enhance grassroots development and political representation.
Adigun commended the Senate leadership and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for initiating this critical national engagement, which allows everyday Nigerians to contribute directly to shaping a constitution that reflects the will and aspirations of the people.
He also emphasized the need for increased youth participation in constitutional and civic processes, urging young Nigerians to stay informed and engaged: “The work to build a better Nigeria must be owned by all and it begins with being present, informed, and actively involved.”
