Ceasefire Between Israel and Iran Welcomed as Triumph of Diplomacy – CGP

The Coalition for Global Peace (CGP) has welcomed the recently brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran, describing it as a victory for diplomacy and a vital step toward lasting peace in the Middle East.
However, the coalition also condemned what it termed “unprovoked attacks” by both Israel and the United States, and called for far-reaching reforms of the international system to prevent future conflicts.
This was said in a statement jointly signed by Tajudeen Alabede, Lead Facilitator, Coalition for Global Peace (CGP); Disu Kamor, Executive Chairman, Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC), Nigeria and Dr Ahmad Jumba, Secretary General, Da’wah Coordination Council of Nigeria (DCCN)
In the statement titled “Israel-Iran Ceasefire: A Triumph of Diplomacy”, the CGP noted that the global community had watched in disbelief as the Middle East crisis took a dangerous turn when Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran on June 13, 2025, amid ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States.
“The situation further got complicated with the U.S. bombing of three nuclear sites in Iran on June 22, 2025,” the coalition said.
“The conflict fulfilled the long-held desire of the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, to go to war against Iran.”
The CGP criticised what it described as the historical and systemic inaction of the international community, warning that the recent conflict had been decades in the making.
“It is a sad fact of history that, in spite of the clear signs of an impending conflict, the world did little to save the situation.”
The coalition did not mince words in condemning both Israel and the U.S. for what it viewed as aggressive actions and criticised the pre-war negotiations as being half-hearted and ineffective.
“A ceasefire in a war of this nature should not absolve parties of responsibility for their actions,” the statement read.
“We strongly condemn the unprovoked attack on Iran by Israel and the US, and question the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency on the eve of Israel’s launch of the war.”
CGP also used the occasion to draw attention to what it sees as structural failures of the United Nations, calling the current global system broken and heavily biased toward powerful nations.
“A system that ranks some countries as exceptional and elevates them above international law promotes global peace and security only in word, not action. This breeds a sense of immunity from scrutiny.”
It added that the double standards in international law enforcement had encouraged unilateralism and fostered impunity, citing Israel’s longstanding treatment of Palestinians as a painful example.
“Unilateralism defeats whatever pretences powerful nations have about rules-based international order,” CGP asserted.
Calling for urgent global reform, the group said the Israel-Iran war should serve as a wake-up call to leaders around the world.
“The world needs an effective and strong UN. Nations, like humans, must learn from history. No power lasts forever. Global power comes with global responsibility, which should be exercised with humility.”
The coalition urged global powers to choose diplomacy over war, warning that in today’s interconnected world, conflicts have far-reaching consequences.
“Human life is sacred and should not be regarded as an expendable piece of statistics.”
Beyond the ceasefire, CGP stressed the importance of addressing the Palestine Question, describing it as central to regional instability and a challenge that must no longer be ignored.
“A fully-fledged State of Palestine should become a reality sooner rather than later.”
The statement concluded with a solemn wish: “May this ceasefire mark the beginning of a lasting peace in the Middle East and the world at large.”
The Coalition for Global Peace (CGP) brings together more than 30 faith-based and civil society organisations working together to champion the cause of peace both nationally and globally.
