China Vows Retaliation as Trump Escalates Trade War with New Tariffs

Beijing has vowed to take countermeasures following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on Chinese goods, further intensifying trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
The U.S. had already imposed a 20% tariff on Chinese imports, prompting swift retaliation from Beijing. However, the latest move by Trump, unveiled on Wednesday, introduces an additional 34% tariff hike, pushing total duties on many Chinese products to over 50%.
China’s Ministry of Commerce condemned the tariffs as a violation of international trade rules, accusing the U.S. of unilateral and arbitrary decision-making. The ministry labeled the move as “a typical act of bullying” and urged Washington to remove the restrictions and seek resolution through dialogue.
“If the U.S. refuses to back down, China will take necessary countermeasures to safeguard its rights and interests,” the ministry warned.
Trump also announced a sweeping 10% tariff on most U.S. imports, with even steeper penalties for goods from countries with significant trade surpluses with the U.S., escalating fears of a prolonged trade war.
