Fermin Lopez played a dramatic role in Barcelona’s 4-1 victory over Sevilla, scoring and being sent off within a whirlwind 15-minute spell.
The win moved Hansi Flick’s side to within two points of league leaders Real Madrid.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the seventh minute, reacting quickly to prod home Iñigo Martínez’s header for his 19th goal of the season.
However, Sevilla responded almost immediately, with Ruben Vargas latching onto a pass from former Barcelona midfielder Saúl Ñíguez before firing past the keeper.
Lopez entered after halftime and made an instant impact, heading into the bottom corner with his first touch to restore Barcelona’s lead. However, his night turned sour when he received a straight red card following a VAR review for a reckless knee-high challenge on Djibril Sow.
Sevilla thought they had equalized moments later, but Vargas’ strike was ruled out for offside. Their frustration grew as penalty appeals for a collision between Sow and Jules Koundé were waved away.
Barcelona extended their advantage through Raphinha, who curled in a stunning right-footed strike from outside the box. Despite going down to 10 men, they sealed the win when Eric García nodded in at the back post.
With Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid drawing 1-1 in their derby, Barcelona capitalized on their rivals’ dropped points.
They now prepare to host sixth-placed Rayo Vallecano on February 17, while 13th-placed Sevilla visit Valladolid with the hope of snatching a win on the road.
