The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed that its official website has been hacked by hackers.

The bureau made the announcement via a post on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday. In the statement, the NBS assured the public that it was actively working to restore access to the website, which is a key platform for publishing critical statistics related to various sectors in the country.

The post read, “This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you.”

Attempt to reach the Agency’s website www.nigerianstat.gov.ng was unsuccessful. It says “the site can’t be reached.”

This incident follows a similar incident as the U.S. government urged senior government officials and politicians to ditch phone calls and text messages following intrusions at major American telecommunications companies blamed on Chinese hackers.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said “individuals who are in senior government or senior political positions” should “immediately review and apply” a series of best practices around the use of mobile devices.

The first recommendation: “Use only end-to-end encrypted communications.”

Beijing has repeatedly denied allegations of cyberespionage following allegations by US government.
