Pep Guardiola gives reason for controversial gesture to Anfield after Liverpool fans sang ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola explains his six-finger gesture to Anfield after Liverpool fans sang ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning.’
Man City failed to bounce back from their poor run of form as they lost 2-0 against Liverpool.
Responding to the song, he said “I didn’t expect that at Anfield,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.
“Listen, I’m so proud for my six Premier Leagues, I’m so sorry. I didn’t expect Anfield at 0-2 to chant about sacked, maybe I deserve to be sacked, honestly.
“With the results maybe I’m still in a job because we won six Premier Leagues, a lot of titles, otherwise the hierarchy maybe think ‘this doesn’t work’. But I didn’t expect for them to sing. It’s fine, it’s part of the game.
“When you win you laugh, when you lose they laugh. You have to accept. The time with Jurgen [Klopp] was incredible for me and the battles with Liverpool. Now this will be difficult to repeat but all of us will reflect and try to come strong.”
City, who end the weekend fifth in the table below Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Brighton, have lost four consecutive top-flight games for the first time since August 2008.
In addition, they are without a win in seven in all competitions – unheard of under Guardiola who has brought so much joy and success to City in the past eight years.
“All the stadiums want to sack me, it started at Brighton [on 9 November],” added the 53-year-old, who signed a new two-year contract extension last month.
“Maybe they are right with the results we’ve been having.”
