278 inmates still at large after Borno jailbreak, search operations ongoing, NCS announces
The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) has reported that 278 convicts remain at large following the September 10 jailbreak in Borno.
The incident occurred at the NCS facility in Maiduguri, where several inmates reportedly escaped after floodwaters breached the prison walls.
Initial reports indicated that 281 inmates fled as the facility’s structure was compromised by the flood.
Following the incident, the Borno State Police Command confirmed the arrest of three escapees—Auwalu Aminu, Abubakar Mohammed, and Kyari Kur. A subsequent operation led to the recapture of seven more inmates.
Updating on the ongoing efforts, Borno State Police spokesperson Nahum Daso said a robust search is underway to locate the remaining escapees. “Efforts are still ongoing to arrest the other fleeing suspects, and we will continue to update the public on our breakthroughs and achievements,” Daso stated.
He further confirmed that, to date, four more suspects have been re-arrested and handed back to the correctional authorities.
