Switzerland reopened its embassy in Iraq on Tuesday, marking the end of a 33-year closure.

The Swiss Federal Council announced that this move aligns with its Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Strategy for 2021-24, aimed at bolstering bilateral relations with Iraq and expanding cooperation in the areas of economy, security, and migration.

The Council noted that Iraq’s security situation has significantly improved in recent years, ushering in a new phase of economic development and enhancing its role as a regional mediator. Iraq’s ongoing efforts to establish peace and security in the region have also been recognised.

The Swiss Federal Council highlighted that more than 50 countries, including Austria, France, Italy, and Germany, now have embassies in Baghdad.

The newly reopened Swiss embassy will focus on strengthening ties between Switzerland and Iraq, enhancing cooperation in economic and security matters, and promoting Swiss interests in the region.
