AI revolutionizes journalism, enhances human intellect – Prof Adedimeji
In a thought-provoking address at the launch of The Satellite, a new media outlet, Professor Mahfouz Adedimeji, a distinguished Professor of English from the University of Ilorin, highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in journalism.
Emphasising that AI does not diminish human intellect but rather enhances it, Adedimeji’s insights provided a balanced and forward-thinking perspective on the integration of AI in the media industry.
Adedimeji began his welcome address by placing the advent of AI within a broader historical context.
He drew parallels with past technological innovations, such as the internet, which initially faced skepticism and fears of job losses and social upheaval. He noted that similar apprehensions surround AI today but argued that these fears are often unfounded.
Contrary to the notion that AI poses a threat to human jobs and intellect, Professor Adedimeji posited that AI should be seen as a tool for empowerment. “AI will just join our natural intellects, not destroy them,” he asserted, urging the audience to view AI as a means to enhance their work efficiency and quality.
He emphasized that AI has the potential to make journalistic work faster and better, allowing reporters to focus more on in-depth news gathering and analysis.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of AI, Professor Adedimeji also stressed the importance of maintaining ethical and professional standards in its application. He pointed out that AI, like any other technology, has both upsides and downsides. Therefore, its use in journalism should be governed by a set of rules to ensure it is applied responsibly.
Addressing concerns about job displacement due to AI, Professor Adedimeji suggested that, historically, technological advancements have often led to the creation of new job opportunities. He expressed optimism that AI could similarly lead to new editorial roles and open new avenues within the journalism field.
By embracing AI, journalists can simplify routine tasks and dedicate more time to comprehensive news reporting and analysis.
In his concluding remarks, Professor Adedimeji called for a balanced approach towards integrating AI in journalism. He advocated for responsible application of AI, emphasizing the need to adhere to ethical standards and good morals to fully exploit AI’s capabilities while minimizing associated risks.
His presentation ultimately was a call for change, encouraging journalists to be responsive to emerging technologies while upholding the core values and traditions of their profession.
Professor Adedimeji’s address was a compelling reminder of the potential for AI to revolutionize journalism, not by replacing human intellect, but by augmenting it, thereby paving the way for a more efficient and insightful media landscape.
