The Nigeran government has rejected allegations that it instructed telecom companies to restrict network services during the ongoing nationwide protests.

Speculations went viral on social media on Thursday that the government might have ordered telecom operators to disrupt services to hinder the protests and their activities.

Citizens reported slow internet speeds from  MTN, Airtel, and other networks following the commencement of the protest as anticipated.

Reacting to the allegation, the Minister of Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani clarified on Channels TV that there was no such directive given to halt the network strength as alleged.

Tijani said: “There’s no instruction to tamper with (phone) networks.”

Many Nigerians resulted to the use of various virtual private network (VPN) applications to beat the network drags.

According to Microsoft, A VPN, which stands for virtual private network, protects its users by encrypting their data and masking their IP addresses. This hides their browsing activity, identity, and location, allowing for greater privacy and autonomy.

Recall on Thursday, Tijani condemned the looting of the National Communication Commission, NCC, building in Kano State.
