Rwanda: Kagame pledges to fulfil campaign promises following massive election victory
Rwandan President Paul Kagame has secured the extension of his 24-year rule by another five years in a landslide victory following a dominating performance in Monday’s election.
President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has been declared winner of the presidential election held on Monday, following a landslide result in favour of the ruling party.
The 66-year-old again faced no significant opposition, with leading figures banned from taking part in the poll while his two opponents shared less than 1% of the presidential race.
His opponents Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana have 0.53% and 0.32%, respectively.
Speaking after the election at his Rwandan Patriotic Front party headquarters, Mr. Kagame thanked Rwandans for their trust and acknowledged the country’s “extraordinary situation” and the criticism that comes with it.
Despite the challenges, Kagame expressed confidence in the trust and uniqueness of the Rwandan people and the ruling RPF party.
The Rwandan leader emphasised the need to move forward and focus on implementing campaign promises for the benefit of all Rwandans.
He stated, “We are now done with the election period; it is behind us. What lies ahead is the work we have to do.”
Kagame’s win marks his fourth term in office, extending his 25-year rule in Rwanda.
The election was widely expected to secure his continued leadership, despite criticism from human rights groups and opposition parties.
With the election behind him, Kagame has vowed to address the country’s pressing issues and deliver on his campaign promises.
