South Africa: Minister Kubayi to lead delegation to assess storm-ravaged areas in Cape Town
The South African Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi, and her deputy, Mahambehlala, are set to lead a delegation to Cape Town to assess the progress of interventions aimed at supporting families affected by recent gale-force winds and heavy rains.
The delegation will visit various disaster-stricken areas in Khayelitsha, including Nkandla, Zami Mpilo, Kuyasa, and Victoria Mxenge, to evaluate the situation on the ground.
The visit comes as scores of people have been left homeless across the province, with the number expected to rise due to continued wet weather and potential flooding.
The Human Settlements Emergency Housing team, which includes the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC), has been providing support to those who have lost their informal structures in Monwabisi and New Momwabisi Park, Kuyasa informal settlements, and assessing damages to permanent structures.
The delegation’s visit aims to ensure that affected families receive the necessary assistance and support to rebuild their lives.
The Minister and Deputy Minister will engage with local authorities, emergency services, and affected communities to assess the effectiveness of the interventions and identify areas for improvement.
The visit is a demonstration of the government’s commitment to supporting those affected by natural disasters and ensuring that they have access to safe and dignified housing.
