NFF appoints Finidi George as Super Eagles’ head coach
Enyimba FC’s coach, Finidi George, has been appointed as the head coach of the Super Eagles on a permanent basis.
The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, earlier appointed the ex-Nigerian striker as the interim head coach of the men’s national team.
Finidi took charge from the sidelines in the Super Eagles clash with West African rivals Ghana in a friendly match in Marrakech, Morocco.
The ex-international, who notably marked his debut with a goal during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Burkina Faso at Lagos’ National Stadium on July 27th, 1991, led the People’s Elephant to their 9th league title last season.
The respected household name in Nigerian football will replace Portuguese manager, Jose Peseiro, who left his job after his contract as coach of the Super Eagles officially expired.
Peseiro guided the Eagles to a second-place finish at the 2023 African Cup of Nations.
In just over five weeks, George’s first assignment will be to lead the Super Eagles to success in their two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic in Uyo and Abidjan, respectively.
The matches are must-win encounters, with the Super Eagles lagging in third place in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.
