Libyan authorities have issued a call to the European Union (EU) to intensify efforts in combating illegal immigration and the array of negative phenomena associated with it.

This was the focus of discussions during a meeting between officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Interior of the Government of National Unity and experts from the European Commission.

The meeting, which included key figures such as Abdul Rahman Khammada, Director of the European Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Nicola Orlando, Head of the European Union Mission to Libya, emphasized the urgent need for collaborative action.

A statement released by the Foreign Ministry, noted that the meeting concluded with a mutual recognition of the imperative to consolidate efforts and enhance existing mechanisms and tools aimed at combating illegal immigration.

This cooperation according to the statement, is crucial particularly against the backdrop of the prevailing political and security conditions in the Sahel region of Africa, which has become a focal point for migration routes.

Libyan authorities emphasized the need for proactive measures to address not only the immediate consequences of illegal immigration but also the underlying factors driving such movements, which includes tackling issues such as poverty, conflict, and lack of opportunities, which contribute to the vulnerability of migrants and the challenges faced by host countries.
