Finidi George gives reason for Super Eagles 2-0 defeat against Mali
The interim head coach of the Super Eagles, Finidi George, says the team lost their friendly game against their West African neighbours, Mali due to “a few mistakes.”
Nigeria were condemned to a 2-0 defeat by Eric Chelle’s side in an international friendly on Tuesday night.
El Bilal Toure and Kamorou Dounmbia found the back of the net to run away with the three maximum points available in the game.
Speaking on the defeat to Mali, Finidi, who won his first game in charge against Ghana, told reporters: “I think it was just a few mistakes that cost us the match.
“It was not a bad game. Good intensity, we created a couple of chances, but didn’t score.
“And in a game like this, if you don’t score and you make mistakes, you will be punished.
“I’m happy with the way the boys played and it is quite positive.”
Recall that Côte d’Ivoire won the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations title by coming from behind to defeat Nigeria 2-1 in Sunday’s thrilling final.
William Ekong’s first-half goal appeared to set up the Super Eagles for a fourth title when Franck Kessie levelled and dangerman Sebastian Haller scored late to secure Cote d’Ivoire’s most cherished crown.
