USAID provides additional $80m for Ethiopia in humanitarian aid
The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has pledged over 80 million USD in additional humanitarian assistance to support the affected population in Ethiopia.
The announcement was made by Sonali Korde, Assistant to the Administrator for the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance at USAID, who is currently in Ethiopia.
The aid comes at a critical time as Ethiopia grapples with the compounding challenges of conflict, climate shocks, and insecurity, affecting a significant portion of its population.
The assistance covers various sectors including food security, health, and other essential services, benefiting millions of people across eight regions of the country.
According to estimates, a large number of people in Ethiopia are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
In a press statement, the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia emphasized that this funding will bolster USAID’s humanitarian partners, enabling them to provide essential aid to the most vulnerable communities in the country.
The statement confirmed that the assistance will be channeled through both United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations, supporting a range of initiatives including agriculture and nutrition programs, as well as gender-based violence prevention and response services.
One of the key priorities of this aid package is addressing the pressing nutrition needs in Ethiopia.
It says USAID aims to treat and prevent acute forms of malnutrition for over 1.5 million children under the age of five and more than 600,000 pregnant and nursing mothers in the current year.
