Death toll rises in Gaza as EU chief slams Israel for using starvation as weapon

Dozens of people were killed and several others injured in Gaza after Israeli forces launched attacks across the war-ravaged territory on Tuesday evening.

The Palestinian news agency, WAFA, disclosed that the death toll from an attack on Tuesday evening went up to 10, while in Gaza City, two people were killed and four children wounded in an attack in the Daraj neighbourhood.

This added to the growing death toll that keeps rising on a daily basis, despite an interim judgment by the International Court of Justice demanding that Israel should prevent acts of genocide and allow access to humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.

Meanwhile, the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has said the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is “not a natural disaster” and has accused Israel of using starvation as a “weapon of war.”

Borrell told the UN Security Council on Tuesday that seeking alternative ways of providing support by sea or by air is a reminder that the international community has to act because the natural way of providing support is artificially closed, and starvation is being used as a war arm.

No fewer than 31,184 Palestinians have been killed and 72,889 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.

The revised death toll in Israel from Hamas’s October 7 attacks stands at 1,139 and dozens continue to be held captive.
