Somali, US forces kill three al-Shabab members in Lower Shabelle region
The Somali army forces, with the assistance of the United States military forces, reportedly conducted a planned operation in the Lower Shabelle region, resulting in the killing of three members of the al-Shabaab group.
A statement from the federal government on Monday mentioned that the operation targeted a location where Alshabab members had gathered but did not specify the date or exact location of the operation.
Recently, Somali government forces, supported by international partners, have intensified operations in areas controlled by al-Shabaab. However, the group has neither confirmed nor denied these claims by the government.
Last week, the Somalia government confirmed the killing of 50 al-Shabaab in a military operation in the Lower Juba region.
Deputy Information Minister Abdirahman Yusuf Al Adala informed the Somalia news agency, SONNA, that 20 others were captured alive during the fourth day of offensive operations in various areas of the Lower Juba region.
Somalia has been recording a gradual victory against terror groups following the lifting of weapons embargo on the country.
In December last year, the United Nations Security Council unanimously voted to remove the final restrictions on weapons deliveries to Somalia’s government and its security forces, ending a 30-year arms embargo imposed on the country.
For nearly a decade, Al-Shabab has been engaged in combat with that government.
The group is in charge of most of southern and central Somalia, but it has also managed to spread its influence into regions that the government, which is headquartered in Mogadishu, controls.
