Libyan leaders signs agreement for political progress in tripartite meeting
Libya‘s Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, alongside the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, and the Head of the High Council of State, Mohammed Takala, have jointly announced an agreement to form a technical committee concerned with the amendment of the laws of the 6+6 committee, the Joint Committee for Preparing Electoral Laws.
This move seeks to broaden the basis of consensus, enhance acceptance, and address contentious issues within Libya’s political landscape.
The agreement was signed during a tripartite meeting held in Cairo, at the invitation of the Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
The meeting served as a platform to reconcile differences and foster a Libyan-Libyan dialogue to achieve national reconciliation.
A statement by the heads of the three councils stressed the need to form a unified government tasked with overseeing the electoral process and delivering essential services to the Libyan populace.
While emphasizing the need to urgently convene for a second round to solidify the accord and bring it to effect, the statement called for the support of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the international community and rejected any external interference in the nation’s political affairs.
Reacting, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the host nation, Egypt, lauded the outcomes of the meeting and appreciated the statement’s emphasis on national ownership of any Libyan political track and national dialogue.
Libya is still witnessing a political crisis since 2011 in light of the presence of two governments in the country, one in the east mandated by parliament and the other in the west emanating from political agreements sponsored by the UN.
