Protest rocks Ilorin EFCC office over detention of former Kwara Gov, Abdulfatah Ahmed
A protest broke out at the Ilorin Zonal Command office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday due to the ongoing detention of former Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed.
Ahmed has been held at the EFCC Ilorin office for a third consecutive day, reportedly under investigation for alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor of Kwara State.
The protest by Ahmed’s supporters on Wednesday began in the morning and concluded around noon after an EFCC official, Micheal Nzekwe addressed the demonstrators.
Recall that the embattled politician earlier clarified his visit to the anti-graft agency.
Abdulfatah, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Abdulwahab Oba, explained that the top politician in Kwara State only honoured an invitation by the anti-graft agency, adding that there’s nothing unusual about it, without adding that he was later detained.
The statement added that the governor is ready to answer questions about his time as governor of the state.
“Dr Ahmed’s visit to the EFCC is procedural and routine. He was invited, and he honoured them as he’s always done.
“He’s always ready to respond to any query or question regarding his tenure as governor of the state.
So, there’s nothing unusual about the invitation and his honouring the anti-graft agency.”
The former banker who served as governor from 2011 to 2019, was undergoing interrogation at the EFCC’s zonal office in Ilorin as earlier reported by Afri Reporters.
Ahmed was appointed as the Commissioner for Finance in Kwara after Saraki assumed office as governor in 2003.
Ahmed left office in 2019 after serving two terms in office and was succeeded by the incumbent governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, who emerged on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
