In a resolute move to uphold law and combat illicit activities within Nigeria’s economic centers and ports, the Nigeria Police Force has once again affirmed its dedication to implementing anti-crime strategies.

This commitment is aligned with the broader government agenda of fostering swift economic recovery and development in the nation.

The pledge was underscored by the Eastern Port Police Command following the successful arrest of five individuals in connection with the diversion of bags of wheat destined for the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP). The operation took place in Port-Harcourt on February 6, 2024, leading to the recovery of approximately 1,238 bags of wheat.

The stolen 1,840 bags of wheat, originally intended for transportation from Ibeto Port Terminal, Port-Harcourt, to an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Kano State, were deceitfully diverted by the drivers entrusted with the task. Collaborating with their accomplices, these individuals were intercepted and apprehended by the diligent operatives of the Nigeria Police assigned to the Eastern Port.

The arrested suspects, identified as Umar Hashim, Edidiong Umoh, Udah Stanley, Abubakar Jariri, and Yunusa Babangida, were taken into custody, and the stolen 1,238 bags of wheat, along with the vehicles used in the crime, were successfully recovered. The World Food Programme has received the returned bags of wheat, and ongoing efforts are underway to retrieve the remaining 602 bags and apprehend additional suspects involved in the criminal activity.

Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the Nigeria Police’s determination to prosecute individuals involved in activities undermining the country’s economy and causing hardships, particularly to vulnerable members of society. He has directed that the suspects be charged to court following the conclusion of investigations and the resolution of all loose ends.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed these developments from Force Headquarters in Abuja on Sunday, February 18, 2024. The incident marks a significant victory in the ongoing battle against economic sabotage and criminal activities affecting the nation.
