Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum bouncy ‘super shoes’ sell out two minutes after going on public sale

The new Nike ‘super shoes’ that Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum wore to shatter the world marathon record were sold out within minutes of going on sale.

The Alphafly 3 shoes – which Kiptum wore during the Chicago Marathon in October – saw the 24-year-old become the first runner to post under two hours and one minute in an official race.

Nike finally released the shoes for public sale on Thursday morning, pricing them at a whopping £284.99.

However, within two minutes, the whole supply on their website was sold out.

Some of those individuals who were lucky enough to buy a pair have since advertised the shoes for resale, with one listing them on eBay at a price of £589 if anyone wants to ‘buy it now’.

The shoes are particularly special because they are made with ultra-light materials that are reinforced by carbon inside a special responsive foam.

This is designed to help runners retain energy and propel themselves forward.

After they sold out within two minutes, a post on the Nike website said: ‘This product is currently unavailable.’

It is not yet clear whether or when further stock will be released to the public.

Along with Kiptum’s record run in Chicago, since 2020, every distance world record at more than 5,000 metres has been beaten in a version of super shoes or super spikes.

A similar buying frenzy took place when Tigist Assefa posted the women’s marathon world record in September’s Berlin Marathon when wearing Adidas’ Adizero Adios Pro 1 shoes.

Kiptum – who is still under 24 – is expected to be a favourite for the Paris 2024 Olympic marathon.
