Nigeria's Victor Osimhen wins Africa’s best player of the year award

At the Confederation of African Football (Caf) awards ceremony held Marrakesh, Morocco , Victor Osimhen was crowned 2023 African Footballer of the Year, the first Nigerian to win the honour in 24 years.

The Nigerian forward ended the dominance of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah as he won his biggest individual African football honour.

He edged Egypt’s Mo Salah and Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi in Marrakech, a first time a Nigerian has won the individual honour since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.l

Osimhen had a brilliant 2022-23 season as he delivered the Italia Serie A for Napoli, their first league title in 33 years.

It was also a double honour for Nigeria in Morocco as Asisat Oshoala retained women’s player of the year award – the sixth time the Barcelona forward has won the individual title.

Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa got the Women’s Club of the Year award after the club won African Women’s Champions League for a second time.

In other categories, Morocco won the best National Team award following their brilliant performance at the last FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The National Team of the year, women’s category, went to Nigeria while club of the year award went to Al Ahly of Egypt.

The continental football body also revealed Africa’s players men’s and women’s Best XI line-ups.

President Macky Sall of Senegal picked up the special achievement award among several honours dished out in Marrakech.
