Maiduguri Market: Zulum sets rebuilding committee, demands fast track

Governor Babagana Zulum has set up committee to speed up the ongoing reconstruction process of Maiduguri Monday Market for immediate commencement of trading activities.

The Governor charged the high-powered during an impromptu visit to the reconstruction spot on Sunday, June 2, 2023.

Following a fire disaster which razed the entire market in February and destroyed goods of billion worth, Zulum disbursed a sum of two billion naira as palliative for the affected traders and rebuilding fund.

According to a statement, “Zulum in response took measures including the release of N2 billion in February to a committee he constituted. The governor doled one billion for allocation to victims of the fire disaster as palliative while construction work began immediately.”

Supporting the governor’s effort, some philanthropists and good people of Borno state has forwarded their donations to the state government which “the governor said was going into a special account.”

Zulum, in his effort to ensure proper implementation of project, had appeared for on the spot assessment of the work a number of times.

Speaking at his last visit, Zulum stressed the need to fast track the market reconstruction to abate economic suffering currently faced by traders and neighbours, who rely solely on the market for their survival.

“Timely completion of the Monday Market reconstruction would not only restore economic activities but also boost the morale of residents,” the governor said.

He added by ordering strict compliance with the original master plan of the market in their cause of execution to prevent or mitigate against fire disasters in future.

Commending the contractor for the job well done so far, Zulum expressed his satisfaction with the way the rebuilding process is being carried out.

He concluded by assuring “traders and residents that when completed, the reconstructed market should have improved facilities for a vibrant economic environment.”
