MURIC Urges Oyo Govt, Politicians to Respect Chief Imams
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Oyo State Chapter, has called on the Oyo State Government, political parties, and politicians to accord greater respect to Chief Imams, stressing the need for harmony between religious leaders and political authorities.
In a press release dated April 12, 2026, the group highlighted the significance of Chief Imams as spiritual leaders and custodians of Islamic teachings, noting that their roles are central to the moral and religious well-being of the Muslim community.
“MURIC emphasizes that Chief Imams occupy highly revered positions as spiritual leaders, community guides, and custodians of Islamic teachings… they deserve to be treated with dignity and honour in all official engagements,” the statement read.
The organisation outlined key guidelines for engaging Chief Imams, urging authorities to avoid scheduling official programmes during Friday Jumu’ah prayers to allow Imams fulfil their religious obligations without conflict.
It also stressed the importance of proper planning and communication, stating that invitations to Chief Imams should be extended with at least one week’s notice, except in special circumstances.
“Adequate notice must be given prior to invitations… accompanied by a formal and respectful invitation,” MURIC stated.
The group further advised that Imams should not be treated as ceremonial guests but as respected religious authorities, calling for appropriate arrangements that reflect their status and religious sensitivities.
“Dignified seating arrangements must also be ensured… clearly separated from areas where alcohol is being served, in order to preserve the sanctity of their office and beliefs,” the statement added.
MURIC reiterated that mutual respect between government institutions and religious leaders is vital for social harmony, peaceful coexistence, and the development of an inclusive society.
The statement was signed by the Chairman of the group in Oyo State, Barrister Lawal Abduwaheed, and the General Secretary, Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade.
