MUSWEN Reaffirms Support for Sultan’s Leadership Ahead of Ramadan Moon Sighting
The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has reaffirmed its confidence in the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), amid concerns over conflicting announcements on the commencement date of the 2026 Ramadan fast.
In a statement jointly signed by MUSWEN President, Rasaki Oladejo, and Executive Secretary, Wole Abbas, the organisation stressed the need for Muslims to respect the established and recognised process of moon sighting under the leadership of the NSCIA.
The group noted that recent declarations by some individuals and groups regarding the start of the fasting period were made in disregard of the traditional and widely accepted procedure coordinated by the NSCIA leadership.
MUSWEN urged Muslims, particularly in South West Nigeria and across the country, to remain united and avoid actions that could lead to division within the Ummah.
According to the statement, Muslims should “be wary of the antics of people who do not wish Islam and Muslims well,” warning that such attempts are designed to create disunity through a “divide and conquer” approach.
The organisation emphasised that unity must remain the guiding principle, citing the Qur’anic injunction that calls on believers to hold firmly together and avoid division.
By reaffirming support for the Sultan’s leadership, MUSWEN said it remains committed to promoting harmony, discipline, and adherence to recognised religious authorities in determining the official commencement of Ramadan.
