President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to religious freedom and tolerance, emphasizing that the country remains a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees protecting citizens of all faiths.
In a statement on Saturday, the President said his administration has, since 2023, maintained open and active engagement with both Christian and Muslim leaders while addressing security challenges affecting Nigerians across different faiths and regions.
Tinubu rejected claims that Nigeria is religiously intolerant, saying such characterizations do not reflect the nation’s reality nor acknowledge the government’s ongoing efforts to safeguard freedom of religion and belief for all.
“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it,” he stated.
The President further expressed Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and strengthen cooperation in protecting communities of all faiths.
