The Agunbe Descendants Union (ADU), Ikirun, has issued a strong call to action, urging elders, traditional rulers, and community stakeholders to resist what it describes as a coordinated attempt to marginalize Ikirun in the selection of the next Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Ifelodun chapter.

In a public statement released by the union, ADU alleged that there are “covert moves to impose an outsider” on the union, pointing fingers at key figures including the Tutor General from Ila under the Osun Central Education District Office (OCEDO), Mr. Badmus (the current NUT chairman), Mrs. Ogunbemile (a primary school headmistress), and others.

According to the union, this group is working behind the scenes to install Mr. Adewale Adeyemi Adenira from Igbajo as the next NUT chairman.

“This is not only unfair but a direct insult to the integrity and contributions of Ikirun indigenes to the teaching profession and education sector within Ifelodun LGA,” the statement read.

The union further noted that since the inception of the NUT in Ifelodun, only two indigenes of Ikirun have ever been allowed to lead the union, while leadership has repeatedly gone to individuals from other towns—depriving Ikirun of deserved recognition and benefits.

Even more concerning, the statement alleged that Mr. Adenira is the biological brother of the Tutor General from OCEDO, raising fears that the selection process is being manipulated for personal and political gain.

“Mr. Adewale Adeyemi Adenira is allegedly the brother of the Tutor General from OCEDO, and it appears this is more about power consolidation and favoritism than merit, equity, or fairness,” the union stated.

In response, the Agunbe Descendants Union is calling on all elders of Ikirun, traditional rulers, education stakeholders, political representatives, and community advocacy groups to “rise immediately and demand transparency, fairness, and local representation in this process.”

“Ikirun must not be sidelined again! Let merit and justice prevail. Let us protect our town’s interest with unity and bold voice,” the statement concluded.

The union emphasized that this is a crucial moment for Ikirun to assert its rights and ensure equitable participation in the leadership of professional bodies that directly impact the lives and careers of its educators.
