Akinorun Grammar School, Ikirun — once a shining symbol of educational excellence in Osun State — is now a shadow of its former self, as years of neglect have left the school in alarming disrepair.

Originally built and inaugurated in a celebratory event under the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the institution once stood as a beacon of hope for the sons and daughters of Ikirun and its surrounding communities.

“Akinorun Grammar School, as we currently have it, was built to taste by the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and was equally commissioned with celebration and fun at a time,” Inside-Ikirun, a concerned group said.

However, the current state of the school tells a different story — one of abandonment and rapid decay.

The classrooms are reportedly in poor condition, with broken windows, crumbling infrastructure, and a dangerously dilapidated hall.

“All the classes are no longer in good condition; the roof of the hall is not only leaking, but also almost completely damaged, the windows are no longer in place and the security of the school premises is also a great concern,” the group continues.

Most disturbing is the revelation that the purpose-built hall of the school has become a den for criminals and vagrants. “In fact, the purpose-built hall of the school is now an abode for hoodlums, (who smoke tirelessly in there) and mad men (who sleep and keep their rags therein),” the post lamented.

While efforts have been made in the past to repair the school’s roof — “especially twice by a particular old student (name withheld)” — the scale of damage now calls for a more urgent and comprehensive intervention.

“I am not oblivion of the fact that this roof has been repaired repeatedly… but the hall now requires an urgent and proper attention,” it stressed.

In a heartfelt appeal, Mr. Adebayo Olawale, speaking on behalf of the Concerned Indigenes of Ikirun in Ifelodun Local Government of Osun State, urged the government, alumni, and public-spirited individuals to intervene.

“I want to humbly and sincerely call on the government of the state, the old students of the school and other well-meaning individuals, to arise and help protect and renovate the structures of our common heritage, Akinorun Grammar School, Ikirun,” he pleaded.

“Ikirun A gbe wa o. Osun a dara,” he concluded — a heartfelt prayer for revival and restoration.
