The United States will abandon its attempt to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days unless there are immediate signs of progress, warned US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Speaking after a meeting with European leaders in Paris, Rubio made it clear that Washington would not allow the process to drag on indefinitely.

“We’re not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end,” he said, stressing that the US had “other priorities to focus on.” He emphasized urgency: “We need to determine very quickly now – and I’m talking about a matter of days – whether or not this is doable.”

“If it’s not going to happen, then we’re just going to move on,” he concluded, acknowledging the difficulty of reaching a peace deal but underlining the need for immediate signs of feasibility.

Rubio’s remarks followed Ukraine’s initial step toward finalizing a major minerals and reconstruction deal with Washington.

On Thursday, Ukraine and the US signed a memorandum of intent to establish an investment fund for rebuilding Ukraine, aiming to finalize the economic partnership agreement by 26 April. While the memo lacks specific details, leaks suggest it could include control over energy infrastructure, oil, and gas.

The announcement was made by Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko on X, accompanied by images of her and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signing separately during an online call.

Trump, who previously disrupted talks during a public clash with President Volodymyr Zelensky, briefly referenced the deal in a press conference with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Recall that in February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and began occupying more of the country, starting the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II. The war has resulted in a refugee crisis and tens of thousands of deaths.
