Two men have been arrested in Ekiti State for allegedly operating an illegal university study centre affiliated falsely with Kwara State University, Malete.

The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Eribo, made the announcement in Ado Ekiti on Thursday while presenting a report of recent breakthroughs by the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Eribo revealed that the suspects—Adesanmi Sunday and Akinola Olaolu—had been arraigned in court on 11 April 2025 after investigators uncovered their illicit activities. The duo allegedly conspired to defraud members of the public by running an unauthorized study centre in Ado Ekiti, where they issued fake Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees under the guise of legitimacy.

“Detectives of the Criminal Investigations Department, on February 18, received credible intelligence that some syndicates are illegally and unlawfully operating the Kwara State University study centre in Ado-Ekiti, where several Bachelor and Master degrees were issued to unsuspecting members of the public,” Eribo stated.

Upon reaching out to the university, authorities confirmed they had no affiliation with the study centre or its operators. Both suspects have since been charged in connection with the fraudulent operation.

In addition, Eribo provided updates on other recent cases handled by the CID.

Over the past three months, police have made arrests in 12 rape cases, recovered stolen vehicles, apprehended suspects involved in child abuse, and taken into custody individuals suspected of murder and armed robbery. While some cases are already in court, others are pending further investigation.
