Man remanded for strangling father over motorcycle
A 32-year-old man, Sunday Abilewa, has been remanded in custody for allegedly strangling his father, Abu Abilewa, to death in Isua-Akoko, Akoko South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident reportedly occurred on December 31, 2024, following a heated argument over a motorcycle.
The defendant appeared before the Magistrates’ Court on a single charge of murder after being apprehended by the Ondo State Police Command.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Abdulateef Suleiman, the defendant had demanded that his father buy him a new motorcycle. When the 68-year-old father refused, the disagreement escalated, leading to the tragic act.
Suleiman further revealed that attempts by the deceased’s wife to de-escalate the situation were unsuccessful. The defendant was alleged to have been under the influence of hard drugs during the incident.
The offence, Suleiman noted, contravenes Section 316 and is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
Presiding Magistrate F.A. Akinboboye declined to accept the defendant’s plea, ordering his remand at the Olokuta Correctional Centre.
The court adjourned the case to February 25, 2025, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
