New Alaafin of Oyo begins 21-day traditional rites

The newly announced Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, is set to commence the traditional 21-day rites required for his ascension to the throne of his ancestors.
Governor Seyi Makinde declared Owoade as the new monarch of the ancient Yoruba kingdom on Friday and formally presented him with the staff of office during a ceremony on Monday.
The event was attended by the kingmakers, known as the Oyomesi, alongside top government officials and prominent figures from the state.
Oba Owoade succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away three years ago, leaving a legacy that spanned decades.
Reports say new Alaafin has travelled to Oyo town, where he will be warmly received by the town’s sons and daughters.
The source further revealed that the traditional rites, a vital step in the monarch’s full ascension to power, are set to begin immediately.
The commencement of these rites marks a significant cultural moment for Oyo, as the community embraces its new traditional leader while preserving the rich customs surrounding its royal heritage.
