Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially confirmed Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, bringing an end to a prolonged succession process.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the endorsement followed “extensive consultations and divinations” conducted by the Oyomesi, the council of kingmakers in Oyo. The new Alaafin’s appointment has received the full backing of the state government.

The Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ademola Ojo, described the announcement as a resolution to the disputes and controversies that have persisted since the demise of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, on April 22, 2022.

Hon. Ojo remarked, “This announcement puts to rest the socio and legal bickerings that have ensued since the passing of the former Alaafin. We urge all citizens of Oyo State to celebrate this momentous occasion and lend their unwavering support to the new Alaafin.”

The government also expressed optimism about Prince Owoade’s reign. “We pray that his reign will usher in peace, prosperity, and unity to the historic Oyo Kingdom,” said Prince Dotun Oyelade.

The appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the Alaafin is expected to restore stability and progress to Oyo Kingdom, one of the most revered traditional institutions in Yoruba culture.
