Deputy Speaker Kalu assures progress on Nnamdi Kanu release, advocates unity in Southeast
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed optimism about the imminent release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking on Thursday in Abuja during a meeting with the South East Legislators Forum, Kalu reassured lawmakers and stakeholders that high-level negotiations were ongoing to secure Kanu’s release.
“I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to come out. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers,” Kalu stated, emphasizing that the results of these discussions would soon be evident.
The forum, led by Ebonyi State House of Assembly Majority Leader Kingsley Ikoro, convened to address pressing issues in the region. Kalu urged unity among the Southeast’s representatives, stressing the importance of networking and collaboration to tackle challenges, including the contentious sit-at-home protests.
“The power of unity and growth is vital,” Kalu remarked, calling for an end to the sit-at-home protests that have negatively impacted the region. He also advocated for the South East Development Commission (SEDC) to drive sustainable growth.
Kalu encouraged legislators to engage actively in constitutional amendments planned for the coming year and to develop a common legislative agenda for the Southeast.
Nnamdi Kanu, currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, faces a treason trial after his extradition from Kenya.
Recently, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu hinted at President Bola Tinubu’s willingness to facilitate Kanu’s release, recognizing its importance for peace and stability in the region.
