Courts bar Dele Farotimi from selling, distributing, controversial book
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has issued an interim injunction against human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, restricting him from further publishing, distributing, or promoting his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
The ruling by Justice Peter Kekemeke followed an ex-parte application filed by Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, a managing partner at Afe Babalola’s law firm.
Justice Kekemeke’s order also prohibits agents, publishers, and distributors from circulating the book in physical or digital formats, including online and on social media.
Additionally, the judge directed security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force and State Security Service, to seize all existing copies of the book pending the determination of a motion on notice for interlocutory injunction. The agencies are required to file an affidavit confirming compliance within 72 hours of receiving the order.
In a related case, an Oyo State High Court also granted an interim injunction against Farotimi, restraining him or his agents from further printing or circulating the book. The order was secured by Adebayo Adenipekun, SAN, of Afe Babalola’s firm, through an ex-parte application heard by Justice Mufutau Adegbola.
Justice Adegbola adjourned the hearing of the interlocutory injunction to January 7, 2025, directing Farotimi’s lawyers to be notified.
