Ghana: Police intensify security measures, arrest 89 for election-related offences
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has arrested 89 individuals nationwide in connection with various election-related offences over the past two days. Of these, 40 suspects have been linked to the destruction and looting of state properties.
“89 suspects have so far been arrested in connection with various offences; 40 of these suspects are directly connected to acts of vandalism, looting, and destruction of property. All these suspects are in custody and will be taken through the due process of the law,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi during a press briefing on Monday.
She further cautioned the public, saying, “We would like to use this opportunity to caution persons to desist from such acts of violence, as the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to face justice.”
The police have implemented security measures to curb further disturbances and are prepared to deploy additional resources to prevent more post-election violence.
The arrests follow incidents, including the invasion of the national head office of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in Accra and the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, where some people, believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), looted state-owned laptops, damaged office equipment, and removed pictures of President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The post-election unrest has resulted in the deaths of three residents and left several others injured.
