Israeli airstrikes intensify violations of Lebanon despite ceasefire
Israeli warplanes and drones conducted multiple operations in Lebanon on Friday, breaching the fragile cease-fire established on November 27.
Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported Israeli drones flying at low altitude over Beirut’s southern suburbs.
This was followed by airstrikes targeting areas near the Litani River, between Yohmor al-Chaqif and Zawtar al-Sharqiyah in the Nabatieh district.
Additional destruction occurred in Odaisseh town within the Marjayoun district, where Israeli forces blew up multiple buildings.
Friday alone witnessed 14 violations, bringing the total number since the cease-fire to 155. The terms of the agreement require Israel to withdraw forces south of the Blue Line—a de facto border—in phases, while the Lebanese army is mandated to deploy to southern Lebanon within 60 days.
However, the enforcement mechanisms remain unclear despite oversight responsibilities by the United States and France.
Lebanese health authorities have reported devastating human and infrastructural losses since October 2023, with over 4,000 fatalities, 16,500 injuries, and more than 1 million individuals displaced.
The repeated violations exacerbate tensions in the region, casting doubt on the durability of the cease-fire agreement and the prospects for long-term stability.
