The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) convened its 10th Expanded General Purpose Committee meeting under the leadership of its President-General, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.

The meeting, attended by prominent Muslim leaders, government representatives, military officials, business executives, and academics, focused on addressing the state of the Ummah and Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.

The Council highlighted the need for unity and called on the federal and state governments, as well as the National Assembly, to reduce political and social tensions through dialogue and trust-building, especially concerning tax reform bills. It commended efforts by the government and traditional leaders in reducing communal clashes, emphasizing the importance of such roles in maintaining peace.

Addressing the harsh economic climate, the apex Islamic body in Nigeria urged governments to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, while encouraging Muslims to explore innovative economic opportunities and empower youth for financial independence.

It stressed the need to combat illegal mining, linking it to the issue of out-of-school children, and proposed measures to formalize contributions from the informal economy to enhance national planning.

The Council expressed concern over the issuance of a private airstrip license to a religious leader, citing security risks, and called for its revocation. It also urged governments to prioritize food security and education to safeguard citizen welfare.

The lack of recognition of Islamic marriage certificates was decried as discriminatory, and efforts to address this issue were renewed.

The NSCIA reaffirmed the sole authority of the Centre for Islamic Studies, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, in organizing national Qur’anic recitation competitions and proposed adding more Imams to the National Mosque to enhance its religious and social responsibilities.

Despite acknowledging challenges, the Council urged Nigerians to remain hopeful and grateful for progress, praying for divine wisdom for leaders to improve the lives of citizens.
