NLC announces position on December 1 deadline for minimum wage implementation

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reaffirmed its December 1 deadline for all state governments to implement the new minimum wage of ₦70,000, warning of an indefinite strike in non-compliant states.
The minimum wage increase was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on July 29, 2024, raising the baseline from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.
Recall that the NLC announced that states failing to meet the November 30 implementation deadline would face industrial action.
Despite progress, with over 30 states adopting the new wage structure, some states, including Zamfara, Sokoto, Cross River, and Nasarawa, have yet to finalize agreements for enhanced worker payments.
NLC spokesperson Benson Upah emphasized the union’s unwavering stance on the matter: “Majority is not everybody. All states must heed the union’s directive, or we’ll carry out our threats.”
