Muslim cleric takes position on polygamy without financial stability

A growing Muslim scholar, Bello Muhammed Tahir, has sparked conversations online with his recent statements on polygamy, as he emphasized the importance of financial responsibility in plural marriage despite its permissibility in Islam.

The cleric argued that men should prioritize fulfilling their existing marital commitments before considering taking a second wife. He noted further that promising a first wife certain comforts, such as a car, and then providing those same comforts to a second wife while still owing the first is unjust.

The cleric questioned the morality of marrying another woman while still failing to meet previous promises. “You promised her and her family that you would buy her boxes and other things as soon as you have the means, and they understood with you,” he said. “Then, you find another woman appealing and marry her, providing her with the things you promised your first wife but haven’t delivered?”

The post reads in full: “You can’t be owing your wife the necessary carriages and you proceed to taking a second wife.

“You promised her and her family that you would buy her boxes and other things as soon as you have the means and they understood with you.

“You then found a sister appealing as a prospective second wife, and you are marrying her?

“As if that wasn’t enough, you got for her some of those things you promised your wife that you are yet to fulfill.

“And when she talks now, we would be quick to label it jealousy or that she doesn’t want a second wife.

“There are some of us who are not qualified to have a wife, let alone dualize.

“Allahumma barik.”

His words highlight the financial implications of polygamy and the need for self-reflection. “There are some of us who are not qualified to have a wife, let alone two,” he stressed.

The cleric’s message encourages men to prioritize their existing relationships and financial commitments, cautioning against taking on additional responsibilities without fulfilling their current obligations.
