The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State has won Saturday’s elections, securing all 305 councillorship and 27 chairmanship positions in the state’s 27 local government areas.

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) announced the results at its collation center at its headquarters in Owerri on Sunday.

ISIEC chairman Charles Ejiogu declared the results without providing the specific figures for the parties involved, stating that “all the details of the results will be made available accordingly.”

He added, “Out of the 19 registered political parties, 17 participated in the election, which took place in 305 electoral wards, 27 LGAs, and 4,758 polling units. I wish to announce to Imo people and the general public that after a peaceful, credible election, the All Progressives Congress emerged winner across the board.”

Ejiogu thanked all political parties and their candidates “for exhibiting decorum throughout the process” and also commended stakeholders, including security agencies, political actors, and the media, for their cooperation during the election.

He urged any aggrieved individuals or parties “to channel their grievances accordingly, in line with the extant laws.”

After the announcement, Iheukwumere Alaribe, the chairman-elect for Aboh Mbaise, pledged to lead transparently, inclusively, and with the fear of God.

Despite the peaceful nature of the elections, they were marked by significant voter apathy, with voting not taking place in most local government areas. It is noteworthy that the Inter-Party Advisory Council in Imo had announced on Tuesday, September 17, its decision to boycott the election.
