#EndBadGovernance protest organisers reply Nigeria police boss, reject confined demonstrations
The main organisers of the planned #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests, starting from August 1, have rejected the proposal of the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun for confined protests.
The rejection follows the suggestion of confined rallies in some specific locations against street demonstrations during a meeting with the organisers.
According to the IGP: “It is not advisable to go on street processions because as you are planning peaceful protests, some are planning violence.”
Contrary to the IGP’s suggestion, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, counsel for the Take It Back Movement, a key organiser of the nationwide protest, has expressed opposition.
On August 1, a segment of Nigerians will engage in a mass demonstration to express their discontent with the prevailing economic hardship.
Undeterred by pleas from both federal and state authorities, the protest organisers remain resolute in their plan to stage a 10-day protest from August 1st to 10th
Earlier the police denied the imposition of a nationwide curfew starting at 4 p.m. for all protests.
A statement by Muyiwa Adejobi said “The NPF hereby categorically states that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has not declared any curfew. Additionally, it is pertinent to state that such information would have been communicated via the official Nigeria Police Force platforms were it true.
“The false publication suggesting otherwise is a product of the authors’ imaginations and does not represent the position of the Nigeria Police. We urge all media outlets and the general public to disregard this misinformation and rely on official statements from the Nigeria Police Force or other authorized government agencies.”
