Lagos, battles floods: Schools shut, homes Affected
Due to persistent flooding caused by heavy rainfall, schools in some parts of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, have been forced to close their doors and advise students to remain at home, as the flooding continues to disrupt educational activities.
White Sand Estate is one of the most impacted areas in Lagos, frequently experiencing severe flooding.
Many parts of Nigeria, especially Lagos, witnessed heavy rains on Wednesday, which rendered homes flooded, with water reaching mid-level heights inside residences.
The severe flooding has left many residents trapped as their living spaces are submerged.
Residents blamed the recurrent flooding in the area on poor roads, inadequate drainage systems, and lack of maintenance.
They then called on the government to urgently address the problem.
The latest flooding highlights broader challenges facing Lagos residents and others across the country as the rainy season hits its peak.
Earlier, Nigeria’s emergency agency warned that some parts of the country would experience severe flooding while calling for immediate proactive measures to reduce the impacts.
In 2022, widespread flooding killed more than 603 people in Nigeria, left around 90,000 homes under water, and blocked food and fuel supplies, according to officials.
The ministries for humanitarian affairs and disaster management said in an online posting that the floods affected 27 out of Nigeria’s 36 states and impacted around 1.4 million people.
