NigeriaLabour Congress gives fresh update on intending strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has assured that the body will not embark on another nationwide industrial strike as the agitation for wage increment continues.
In a press conference on Monday, NLC President, Joe Ajaero disclosed that the union awaits the outcome of the proposed wage with President Bola Tinubu.
“We cannot declare strike now because the figures are with the President. We will wait for the President’s decision.
“During the tenure of the immediate past president, the figure that was proposed to him was N27,000 by the tripartite committee but he increased it to N30,000. We are hopeful that this president will do the right thing,” Ajaero said.
Recall Nigeria’s two main organised unions, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), had recently shut down the national grid and disrupted flights across the country as they enforced an indefinite strike over the government’s failure to agree to a new minimum wage.
The strike was suspended for a week last Tuesday to continue negotiations with the government over a new minimum wage after reforms in the West African nation caused inflation to grow, worsening a cost of living crisis.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had given a marching order to the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to come up with the cost implications of the proposed salaries.
Mr. Tinubu has assured a steadfast commitment to establishing a National Minimum Wage, emphasizing the government’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of its citizens.
