Al-Hikmah University don Sanusi Lafiagi to married men: “You are 100% financially responsible for your family”
Dr Sanusi Lafiagi, a prominent Islamic scholar and academic from Al-Hikmah University, north-central Nigeria, has harped on the financial responsibilities of married men towards their families, stressing that they are 100% financially responsible for their households.
Speaking at a just-concluded “Best of Men” webinar, Dr Lafiagi highlighted that men are fully accountable for the economic well-being of their households, urging them to take the obligation seriously.
Instead of sharing household bills, the Department of Islamic Studies lecturer charged men to adjust when there’s a need as referred to the rising cost of living across the country.
He explained how mothers of the year’s past would split one cut of fish into four parts for children to share as part of the control measure to keep the family financially stable.
The don said, “During the just concluded “Best of Men” webinar, someone asked me about “sharing bills” and my answer was, “the man is 100% financially responsible for his family.”
“It is for this reason that you have to be on top of the financial situation of your household. Adjust necessarily when there’s a need to. 50k worth of foodstuff a couple of ago is probably 150k worth today. With income not improving, one must force his family’s appetite to reduce and consume what used to be a week’s food in 2/3 weeks or risk moving back to the village.
“Growing up, our mothers would split one cut of fish into 4 parts for 4 of us to share. That was how prudent they were with resources. Balanced diet or no balanced diet, survival is the priority. Alhamdulillāh we turned out fine and healthy. Life isn’t that complicated. “Everyone desires to live comfortably, but the most comfortable thing is to live within your means and damn the consequences.
“It’s that simple!”
